Online Employee Satisfaction Surveys
Posted by: Jake Rosenberg on September 4, 2008 at 1:15PM EST
Our organization utilizes a third-party vendor to administer our employee satisfaction survey. Last year, we switched from paper surveys to an online collection tool. We did not notice a significant change in response rate. What are others experience with online surveys? If you use an online survey, what strategies do you employ to maximize returns?

This was our second year completing the employee opinion survey on-line. The last survey we had less than 50% participation, this year we were at 88%.

I put up a bulletin board to highlight changes since the last survey as well as posted instructions how to complete. We had raffle tickets by the computers so when a staff person completed, they could sign and turn into the secretary for drawings for small gifts.

I think one of the keys is highlighting that we all had the same password so there was no way for supervisors to trace a specific rating to a specific employee...in addition to being able to show follow up previously.

My organization utilizes both on line and paper methods for collecting employee opinion survey data as a large number of seasoned employees prefer the paper method. The % of participation varies from one department to the other, over all we have 75% - 80% participation rate.

we use an online and paper method. all the pins are in a box and you can just pull your pin out. very anonymous/confidential. we had 69% participation rate. like the online alot.

I have the pleasure of managing employee surveys for 17 rural hospitals. We use to do a traditional paper survey where all the data was manually keyed into a program. We have recently transitioned to software that continues to allow us to manage the survey but also provides online, paper, and kiosk options.

While not all of our rural hospitals have the technology (i.e. no computer training rooms, not all employees have email addresses, etc.) to do their survey online - we've seen comparable response rates for the three hospitals where we have rolled out the online survey.

To encourage participation, I have the hospital roll out all methods of organization-wide communication - time clock reminder, payroll stuffers, post cards sent to employee's homes, staff meeting reminders, etc.).

We're struggling with the password/pin option for the online surveys - we've tried unique pins (one pin per employee), an open survey (no pin) and a universal pin to access the survey. The fear, of course, is that one employee will take the survey 10 times and invalidate results. Thoughts?

We have had great success with an online employee satisfaction survey, but it was developed internally. ( We do not have to work with a vendor) I will have to ask what our response rate has been, but I do not that it has been exceptionally high. Confidentiality is ensured and each employee utilizes a password to complete the survey. The online option allows for more convenient access and we have been able to eliminate having to key in results. Employees seem to like the online survey better than the paper. We do surveys every other year and we just completed our second round of employee online surveys in August 2008.

This year our online survey had a great response. We advertised it at least 6 times before letting everyone know of an end date. We also offered a random prize of a $100.00 gas card. I think that helped with participation.
