Magnet Recognition Program
Posted by: Deborah Martin on August 26, 2008 at 9:32PM EST
The Magnet Recognition Program is based on evidence that provides a supportive environment for nurses.  The 14 Forces of Magnetism offer concrete ideas that will attract and retain nurses - just like a magnet!  The program will have a revision due out in the fall that will streamline the 14 forces so there is less redundancy in the program and more emphasis on outcomes.  It is a great blueprint for how to structure your environment.

One of our hospitals is a magnet hospital and the recognition from this program is extremely positive and has built employee builds morale.

Have you seen this increase nursing satisfaction and decrease both turnover and contract labor within the nursing division of your magnet facilties?

Does anyone know how many Magnet programs there are out there? I would imagine it is difficult to acheive but very rewarding for the staff and the hospital and a great marketing tool. Even if one can't achieve Magnet status, the blueprint might be very useful. Not unlike the Baldridge criteria- several healthcare facilities have won that. Just the process can be very helpful to improving processes.

Edumund, the like for ANCC magnet is http://www.nursecredentialing.org/Magnet.aspx. From this website, "The Commission on Magnet recognizes 293 healthcare organizations in 45 states, as well as one each in Australia and New Zealand, for their excellence in nursing service. " Though I think that this is a very good recognition, it focuses primarily on nursing.

Is there any program that recognizes healthcare organizations for overall excellence in clinical services including medical, nursing etc?

Thanks for the information and link. That is alot of organizations, but not a very high percentage of healthcare organizations. Baldrige award recipients in healthcare would be much lower, but a broader recognition beyond nursing alone.

Edumund, you are correct regarding Baldridge. It also seems as though more HCOs are moving to adopt Baldridge philosophy (i.e. key customers / processes). I must retract a bit and mention that Magnet does have a tendency to have an affect on other areas, but the primary focus is on the discipline of nursing.
