EMR
Posted by: Stephen Gabelich at 10:28PM EST on January 25, 2009
In reading entries regarding conversion to EMR I envy the large health system, in that they are in the position to evaluate and choose an EMR solution.  I manage a small medical group that uses a practice management software solution that has an EMR/EHR component available to add on.  However, our groups pause in moving forward comes from the health system we are aligned with, as they evaluate and implement solutions.  We need to make sure that the solution chosen is compatible with chosen health system EMR.  There are other EMR issues with compatibility among vendors, have they considered patients moving their care from one health system to another, what happens to previous, now incompatible records?  This like other challenges presents opportunity.
Employee use of IT
Posted by: Kathy McClelland at 1:31PM EST on January 25, 2009
We have found, contrary to our assumptions, that many employees are not comfortable with the use of IT.  This is evidenced by the difficulty of getting employees to read emails or utilize the intranet.  Part of the issue is that so many of our employees born in countries where IT is less accessible, part is socioeconomic status - inability to afford computers for their homes.  Has anyone successfully transitioned employees to become more comfortable with the use of IT and if so how was this accomplished.

Conversion to EMR
Posted by: Heather Smith at 9:43AM EST on January 21, 2009
One of our biggest challenges is the roll out of EMR appears to the users to be disjointed.  We have numerous IT systems but they do not 'speak' with each other making inefficient for staff often having to put the same information into 2 different systems.  We have talked about collaberating with third parties in sharing patients EMR with patient consent, e.g. outside pharmacies so we can provide continuity of care for pharmaceuticals.   Security of EMR then becomes the biggest hurdle.

Physicians and IT
Posted by: Mary Kay Van Driel at 2:43PM EST on January 19, 2009

Does anyone have experience with collaborating with physicians (who are not employed by the health system) onIT programs?  The powerpoint presentation didn't really touch on this, specifically.

I'm wondering what solutions you've found and how the agreement has worked out?
