Hospitals are currently using Hospital Compare data in their advertising in their communities. Our board struggles with the idea of using this data when it is in our favor because of the negative effects it would have if their was a negative slant on the data for reasons that are not explainable to the community.
This data, Core Measures, for example can at times be misleading although it is publicly reported. I have seen the reporting process evolve and think it is valuable information for the consumer and the precautions. The standard of care for AMI, CHF and Pneumonia has driven quality issues at hospitals and the SCIP project has improved the standard of care for surgical patients.

I was very surprised to hear the presentation on Health Care and feel it was outdated. Joint Commission has evolved and is working hard to include the COP requirements into the Joint Standards. A new release by Joint Commission in January of 2009 included 46 pages of new and revised Accreditations Requirements. This is an excellent example of the current effort for Joint to tighten up on the COP's and demonstrate more continuity between Joint and CMS..
