I heard sometime earlier this year that text messaging outpaced phone calls. As technology becomes more advanced, the old way of marketing is not ideal. For example, who uses the yellow pages anymore, or even print ads? What are others doing to reach a consumer base via the internet? I know many have advanced web pages that allow patients to find providers, schedule appointments, and pay bills on line. I believe that each organization must use a mutlifaceted approach to be successful.

Our marketing strategy for service lines has been 1-2 campaigns per year. I see benefit in a consistent line of marketing streaming throughout the year. Right now if a service line is successful, the marketing efforts decline. I think they need to be constantly sending out the message to keep competition from creeping in. Would you have any thoughts on the differing strategies?

I oversee a Bariatric Surgery service line. The patient population is young and extremely internet savvy. Is anyone utilizing any unique internet marketing strategies to capture market share? I am always looking for addition ways to reach this clientele.

I have had a lot of experience in developing SWOT Analysis for many departments over the past 10-12 years as a director. Now that I am in a senior level position, I find that we do not utilize the SWOT strategy. Can anyone tell me what their experience has or is at this point? I have found that the SWOT does work if used properly.

As it relates to strategic planning, does anyone have any specific ideas on how your hospital or health system has been able to prepare for impending, major changes in healthcare policy? ie. service line expansion, capital projects, operational resources.

A plan often is not the final solution, the strategic plan are not always some fixed rules. A strategic only lead to the directions, the actual plan is the fundamental keys for not to have micro disasters. Wednesday July 1, 2009

Our hospital hired a consulting firm to help develop a 10 year strategic plan that we completed a couple of months ago. I believe that this exercise has been great in helping the executive team focus on many critical issues; however, the implementation process is not going to be easy as the list of critical issues is long and everyone wants to push their own agenda first even though the list has been prioritized. Has anyone else experienced this problem and how did you handle it?
