Strategic Planning Principles

Strategic Planning Priniciples, at the executive level, is a management process for 1) defining the organizational objectives, 2) implementing strategies, and 3) measuring the effectiveness of these strategies.

Although there are only 3 steps...they are very crucial to the process in how they are carried out. An accurate definition is crucial to the existence of a strategic plan. Furthermore, we must measure our effectiveness. Thus, what is measured, is managed.

Business risk is the uncertainty inherent in a business's operating income (EBIT). The BETA is a measure of a security or portfolio's volatility, or systematic risk, in comparison to the market as a whole. The Corporate BETA is the measure of a project's risk (volatility of returns). The Market BETA is a measure of a project's risk relative to a well-diversified portfolio; a well-diversified portfolio has an overall corporate BETA of 1.0.

Few HCOs have the expertise to forecast developments in hardware, software, and applications. Both management consulting firms and IS specialists offer consulting services. There are advantages to each type of company, but the key criteria should be a record of successful engagements and a willingness to match competition or benchmark values on actual performance. The contracting firm is expected to name an on-site leadership team with technical skills and knowledge comparable or superior to those the organization could employ. The on-site managers are supported by the broader experience and specialized knowledge of the contractor's other employees. In concept, the model provides a much richer resource than most organizations. (ref; Griffith & White 6th ed, 2007, pg 408)

What is considered to be the appropriate board size? Obviously, in a system like Henry Ford with multiple boards the size is much larger, but, for a community hospital, where is the cutoff?
